UL 1642 | (Rechargeable) lithium-ion cells and primary (nonrechargeable) cells and batteries

  • Testing for UL 1642 includes short circuit, abnormal charging, forced discharge, vibration, shock, crush, cell impact, temperature cycling, heating, altitude simulation and projectile/fire exposure testing. UL 1642 includes cell safe operating region parameter requirements for lithium-ion cells

UL 2054 | Household and commercial batteries, includes lithium batteries, portable applications

  • Specifies requirements and tests of battery packs for portable applications and for all types of cells, including lithium-ion and lithium primary. Testing for UL 2054 includes short circuit, abnormal charging, abusive overcharge, forced discharge, limited power source, battery pack component temperature, battery pack surface temperature, 250 N steady force, mold stress relief and drop impact. UL 2054 also requires the lithium-ion cells to comply with UL 1642. UL 2054 includes requirements that the battery pack maintain cells within the cell safe operating region parameters.
 

IEC 62133-2 | Part 2: Lithium Systems

  • IEC 62133-2 specifies requirements and tests for the safe operation of portable sealed secondary lithium cells and batteries containing non-acid electrolyte, under intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary cells, and for batteries made from them, for use in portable applications.

UN/DOT 38.3

  • UN/DOT 38.3 details testing requirements that applicable to all lithium cells and batteries. UN 38.3 presents a combination of significant environmental, mechanical, and electrical stresses designed to assess lithium batteries’ ability to withstand the anticipated rigors incurred during transportation.
